Have you been suffering from shoulder pain?

Rehabilitation of the shoulder can be challenging as it’s the most complex joint we have in the human body. A lot of people will tend to focus only on the pain spot. However, most of the time it’s not the root cause of pain but the victim of other muscle imbalance.

One of the possible shoulder pain cause that dosen’t get enough attention in rehab is the serratus anterior.

Serratus anterior is one of the most important muscle we have for the proper function of the shoulder joint . It is commonly suffered from other overactive or tight muscle structures. It originates on the surface of ribs at the side of the chest and inserts along the entire length of the medial border of the scapula.

Serratus anterior is mostly active when you try to reach forward or squeeze your mid back. It also does upward and downward rotation of the scapulae.

Upon strengthening your serratus anterior with the two exercise included below, you might possibly find a relief at your shoulder pain. See if it helps; If not, you are always more than welcome to visit the gym and talk to us!

1)Seated reciprocal reach with ball between arms

– find the stable surface and be seated
– core engaged
– squeeze the stability ball with both elbows.
– start with palm facing each other.
– slowing holding the squeeze 1 arm reach forward with the twist(palm facing upward)

2) Serratus wall slide

– core engaged
– slightly round your upper back
– push your arms against the foamroller
– finger tips touching each other
– twist with the external rotation and roll upward but make sure just the pinky are touching together.
– make sure the shoulders are not elevated
