Unless you are training for a specific event or competition heading to the gym can be a time of confusion even for the most ardent fitness fanatic.
What exercise should I do today? How many sets and reps should I do? How does this really benefit me.
Selecting the right routine to achieve your training goal may be more complex than it appears. In order to help simplify this our trainer, Long, has outlined some simple but important points to focus on when planning your next trip to the gym
1. Prioritize your training goals
What do you want to achieve
Are you trying to increase strength and size
Bulk up your Chest and back, improve the shape of your lower body, glutes hamstrings, quads? Work the big muscle groups 1st, focus on technique and consistent form.
DO your cardio after the strength session so as to maximize the effort during your lifting session
If your focus is to improve your cardio fitness do your conditioning work or drills first then follow up with weight training
The aim here is to focus on achieving the gains you have as a goal then using the secondary exercises to solidify these gains from your session
2. Quality not quantity
Everyone trains for different reasons, to gain muscle, to lose weight, to improve fitness or sports specific performance, some people simply to relieve the days stress.
With this in mind it is important to ensure that we “train smart”. Doing endless burpees may not be as effective as walking 30 mins on an incline when it comes to losing weight, however it could substantially increase your risk of injury
Our goal should be to drive positive change and adaptation within our bodies, if the goal is to build muscle find exercises that reduce the required skill level allowing you to focus on lifting heavier weights, Dumbbells, seated resistance machines and cable based workouts would be a preferred option here.
The key here is to make sure you tie in the goals from above with precise high quality workouts to maximise the success of your gym time
3. Knowledge counts
If you have specific goals in mind make sure you set up the right training plan to match this, research beforehand and cross check as many sources as possible, if you are new to fitness engage a personal trainer to ensure you are following a plan that’s right for you
Or if you would prefer to work out solo, take a fitness assessment and ask them to write a progressive plan for you to follow, also research, there is lots of good information online that can help you to train the right way
